Introduction and acknowledgments

What follows is a step by step procedure of a standard install from start to finish.  It is not necessarily the best way.  It is just what I did.  I will probably change/refine/add to this document over time.  I have no doubt there is a LOT more that can be done on the Linux setup and configuration to make this even better.  I think it’s a pretty good start.  If others find it useful then great.

It is HIGHLY advisable that you DO try to understand the various steps involved in this procedure.  Especially if you attempt to deviated from the procedure in any way and possibly open up a big ole can of worms for yourself.  Understanding what you’re doing is a great way to learn more about the wonderful world of Linux and get more familiar with the inner workings of your computer hardware/software.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank JR Richardson for his Create an Embedded Asterisk Server document.  His document was very instrumental to the success of my project.  The procedure I ended up with differs from his in a few significant ways.  I also tried to give more specific details in some areas where I felt they were needed (at least for me).
